LITTLE ROCK—Celebrations of the passage of the 13th Amendment, lectures and exhibits are among the April 2015 activities the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission has sanctioned, ACWSC Chairman Tom Dupree announced today. The ACWSC will sponsor “Let Freedom Ring!” on April 14, when Governor Asa Hutchinson will ring a bell 13 times at 1 p.m. (1300 hours) on the steps of the State Capitol in Little Rock to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Arkansas’s passage of the 13th Amendment, which brought the country one step closer to the abolition of slavery. The Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission is housed within the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program. The AHPP is the Department of Arkansas Heritage agency responsible for identifying, evaluating, registering and preserving the state’s cultural resources. Other agencies are the Arkansas Arts Council, the Delta Cultural Center in Helena, the Old State House Museum, the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission and the Historic Arkansas Museum.
